The NZAGRC opened in March 2010 and hosted by AgResearch, is a highly effective collaboration between eight leading New Zealand research providers (AgResearch, DairyNZ, Landcare Research, Scion, Massey University, Plant and Food Research, Lincoln University and NIWA) and the industry-led Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGgRc). Scientists from a number of the Centre’s partner organisations feature in the conference programme which, combined with international experts from the UK, Ireland and Australia, is certain to provide a stimulating day.
The NZAGRC receives funding from MAF to undertake research and development that will provide knowledge, technologies and practices which grow agriculture’s ability to create wealth for New Zealand in a carbon constrained world. The Centre’s current R&D programme is aligned with those funded through the PGgRc, MSI, and MAF’s Sustainable Land Management Programme and focuses on reducing nitrous oxide and methane emissions from livestock, increasing carbon sinks/reducing carbon losses in agricultural soils, and better understanding the emissions generated by farm systems. The Conference will include presentations covering methane and nitrous oxide mitigation, enhancing soil carbon sinks and on how these individual approaches can be integrated into low GHG production systems. It will be followed by two days of science workshops where scientists involved in the NZAGRC’s and allied programmes will engage in detailed discussions with an international science advisory team and stakeholders about the future direction of their research programmes.
