Among livestock, beef production is often associated with a substantial carbon footprint, however a report by AgResearch shows that in the case of dairy-derived beef, this isn't always true.

About

AgResearch’s Life Cycle Assessment team, supported by the Bioresource Processing Alliance and in partnership with organisations such as Fonterra and Alps 2 Ocean Foods, has studied the carbon footprint of dairy-derived steers finished between 10 and 18 months of age.

The report finds that beef produced from cattle in fast-finishing systems from New Zealand’s dairy sector could provide reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 48 per cent, when compared to the average for traditional beef systems in New Zealand.
